  • Headaches at your temples that build in by mid-afternoon
  • Catching yourself clenching your teeth during a stressful meeting
  • Your jaw catching or locking for a second when you yawn
  • Avoiding chewy or crunchy foods because you already know what happens after

Why It Happens

TMJ/TMD is a symptom. Something causes it.

Your jaw joint doesn't work alone. It's tied into the muscles in your face, your neck, and how you hold tension when you're stressed. Clenching or grinding overloads the joint and the muscles around it, and that shows up as clicking, headaches, and an ache that's worse some days than others.

You're the one everyone leans on when things get hard. Your jaw is where all of that tension ends up, literally clenched shut.

A real, cause-first evaluation looks at the joint, the muscles, and the posture patterns feeding it. Treat all three, and the headaches usually ease up too.

The Honest Truth

Waiting on it doesn't make it wait on you.

If you keep waiting

  • Jaw clicking can progress into catching or locking
  • Occasional tension headaches turn into a daily occurrence
  • You keep avoiding foods and situations that trigger it instead of fixing what's actually wrong

If you start this week

  • You know what's actually driving the clenching or joint issue by the end of visit one
  • Hands-on relief starts before you leave the building
  • You get a plan with an endpoint: a real one, not an open tab of visits

Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.

How We Fix It

The same four phases. Built for TMJ/TMD.

Every plan has an endpoint. Here's what the four phases look like.

Weeks 1–2

Pain

Ease the jaw tension.

Hands-on treatment calms the overworked jaw muscles and takes the edge off the clicking and ache.

Weeks 2–6

Prime

Restore the movement pattern.

Targeted mobility work restores pain-free opening and corrects the muscle imbalance driving the clenching.

Weeks 6–10

Perform

Build lasting control.

Postural and strengthening work addresses the neck and jaw connection so the tension doesn't just come right back.

Weeks 10+

Prevent

Keep the headaches away.

You're tested chewing, talking, and going through your normal day before you're cleared: that's the endpoint.

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking for TMJ/TMD.

Usually not, and it's rarely the first step. A hands-on evaluation of your jaw, neck, and posture usually tells us what we need to know to start. If dental imaging ever becomes genuinely necessary, we'll help coordinate that with your dentist. You don't have to wait on a scan to start feeling better.

In most cases, yes, and a completely liquid diet or avoiding talking isn't necessary or realistic long-term. The key is finding which movements and habits are aggravating your jaw, which is exactly what a Doctor of PT sorts out at your evaluation, then adjusts as you improve.

Most patients feel meaningful change within 4–6 visits. A full plan runs through all four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform, and Prevent, typically over 8–10 weeks, depending on how long you've been dealing with it. Either way, you get a plan with an endpoint: you'll always know which phase you're in and what's left.
